Adaptive reuse and conservation at City Tattersalls Club Redevelopment.

Balancing the use of heritage assets with the needs for restoration and preservation protects the history, culture and identity of our cities.

City Tattersalls Club is a landmark heritage building within Sydney’s CBD.As part of the Redevelopment package of works, major conservation and restoration is underway at:

  • 194 Pitt Street (former Symonds building) – circa 1914
  • 198-200 Pitt Street (East and West) City Tattersalls Club – circa 1924
  • 202 – 204 Pitt Street (East and West) (former Tattersalls Club) – circa 1890

194 Pitt Street

The former Symonds Building has aesthetic and heritage significance, exemplifying the Federation Free style of building that contributes to the commercial streetscape of Pitt Street. The building’s design is associated with architect Gordon McKinnon.

Formerly part of the family business Symonds’ Furnishing Ltd., and then occupied as Merivale & Mr John for almost three decades – the first specialty fashion boutique in Australia.

198 – 200 Pitt Street

The City Tattersalls Club was purpose-built in 1924, and has been in use for almost a century. With a rich history in Australia’s horse racing culture, the building is associated with architect, E.L. Thompson.

The building’s Club Bar is a rare, largely intact example of an art deco bar interior by Sidney Warden. The Lower Bar served as the Club’s ‘settling room’ – on settling day, it was crowded with bookmakers brandishing large wads of banknotes to settle with each other. The Vault Room (attached to the rear of the Lower Bar) contains secure vaults which were used to store Bookies takings. These vaults will be restored and displayed within the club.

202 – 204 Pitt Street

The former Tattersalls Club at 202 – 204 Pitt was purpose-built for the Tattersalls Club in 1891 (who operated it for 37 years). It was then purchased by the City Tattersalls Club in 1975.

The building’s design is associated with Sheerin & Hennessy, and Robertson & Marks who undertook alterations and additions – most notably the rear ballroom (1914). The Corinthian Room (formerly the Saloon Room circa 1891) and Billiard Room (1914) are highly significant spaces, and will be restored through revitalisation works.

Sitting atop 202 Pitt Street is an impressive horse sculpture, known as the rampant horse. 2500mm tall x 2500mm long x 665mm deep and carved out of sandstone, the original feature has been a strong symbol for the club, given its bookmarking and horse racing roots. Now an important part of their legacy, our team of experts are working to restore the original sculpture and develop a replica. Learn more here.

Sod turn marks start of works at 17-21 Lachlan Avenue Macquarie Park

Building solutions that underpin our social fabric.

Building on a commitment to revolutionise the landscape of student living, guests from Lachlan Avenue Development, Centurion Properties, Colliers, WT Partnerships, Urbis, Northrop, AJC, UOB, PGIM, BDO, the Property Council of Australia (PCA) and RCC celebrated a significant milestone with the sod turning of the new student accommodation facility at 17-21 Lachlan Avenue.

Torie Brown, Executive Director Student Accommodation at the PCA, emphasised the importance of addressing the burgeoning demand for purpose-built student accommodation. “It is vitally important that we grow student accommodation in Sydney to provide students with safe, custom living options that remove them from competing in the private rental market.”

The partnership between RCC, Lachlan Avenue Developments and Centurion Properties will create a well-connected living, learning and social environment. Located in close proximity to Macquarie University, which boasts a student population exceeding 44,000, 17-21 Lachlan Avenue Macquarie Park will cater to the needs of international students returning to the area.

Anthony Bolger, Director, Lachlan Avenue Development Pty Ltd, expressed, “This is an important project for Centurion Properties and one which we are delighted to be working together on with the team at Richard Crookes Constructions. With the benefit of our combined experience in PBSA delivery and operation, we are setting a new benchmark here in Macquarie Park for student accommodation in the Australian market.”

The project will deliver 732 beds – comprising student apartments and five-bed cluster units – in a stepped 10, 13 and 15 storey development. The buildings will also incorporate communal areas with amenities including dining areas, gym facilities, lounges, study rooms, courtyards and a roof terrace with swimming pool.

Since completing our first student accommodation project in 2011, we’ve delivered over 5,500 beds, with an additional 2,000 beds due for completion in 2024.

Construction of the new student accommodation facility is anticipated to be completed by late 2025, marking a significant step forward in meeting the evolving needs of students in Sydney.

Bringing The Falls Estate to life

Setting a new standard for luxury lifestyle apartments.

The Falls Estate is now complete – a luxurious retirement village encompassing 41 independent living units.

Stanley Roth, Director of the Falls Estate, commended the exceptional quality of construction by RCC.  “The quality cannot be faulted,” Roth emphasised, reflecting on the commendations from residents who have begun moving in over the past two weeks. “The RCC personnel overseeing the project were most obliging, and a pleasure to deal with, throughout.

Each of the 9 freestanding 2-storey buildings has been uniquely designed to accommodate challenging topography; sloping sites and sandstone foundations. Connected by a series of breezeways and elevators with wheelchair access, residents can easily access the common areas, amenities and residential buildings cascading down the hillside.

The project transformed the existing semi-rural site while preserving the surrounding 3.4 hectares of native bushland. This biophilic design enables resident wellbeing and relaxation.

  • Smart and sustainable landscaping design initiatives Extensive tree protection and the establishment of woodland management zones safeguarded local biodiversity while minimising disruption to the surrounding ecosystem. Rigorous tree protection measures were implemented to prevent damage during construction activities, including the installation of protective barriers and designated exclusion zones.
  • Preservation of the existing waterfall and historic dam was crucial to the project’s success. Meticulous planning ensured the structural integrity of the dam was safeguarded throughout.
