What We Do Details

Work Health & Safety

RCC has a robust and well-established system for ensuring compliance with OHS&R obligations by all personnel.

RCC’s system has been developed to the requirements and guidelines of the following reference documents:

  • AS/NZS 4801:2001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems
  • Work Health and Safety Management Systems and Auditing Guidelines May 2014

Our company has also been fully accredited by Federal Safety Commission under the Australian Government Building and Construction OHS Accreditation Scheme. This will allow our company to undertake federal projects for the Australian government.

  • Federal Safety Commissioner

RCC is also accredited with the NSW Public Works as addressing the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Management Systems and Auditing Guidelines May 2014 prepared for the NSW Government by the Construction Agency Coordination Committee.

Quality Assurance

Richard Crookes Constructions utilises its quality assurance system which complies with all the requirements of AS/NZS ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems.  The system is certified by Global Mark as meeting the Quality Management System requirements.

RCC’s PMP has proven to be a highly effective quality management system, which we have continually improved over the past decade.  Our management system is accessible to all staff in both hard copy format and through our company intranet.  All RCC personnel are notified of the latest changes or updates, and can have input through our process of continual improvement.

The robustness of our management systems, and the discipline in which we implement them on all of our projects, is a key factor in our success on Government projects, whereby this is a major requirement.

Environmental Management

Our environmental management system has been developed to the requirements and guidelines of the AS/NZS ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems.

RCC is committed to continually improve the integration of sustainability into our working environment and business processes. Our aim is to play a proactive role in contributing to achieving sustainability where we have influence in the construction delivery.  RCC is a member of the Green Building Council of Australia.

We are committed to the following key objectives:

  • Sustainable Construction – use of renewable resources
  • Reduced Operational Resources – reduced maintenance
  • Sustainable reuse at end of serviceable life.

We will apply the resources and processes necessary to ensure environmental compliance by all parties involved with the project.  Specific issues such as stormwater management and siltation control, cleaning of vehicles leaving and entering the site to reduce the cross  contamination of seed and soil in the local environment, excavated spoil control, contamination assessment and mitigation, fire and hot works procedures, and noise and vibration awareness will be a particular focus.

The process that will be adopted to ensure compliance with environmental obligations, both statutory, RCC Environmental Management Systems and client specific requirements involves:

  • Identification through initial site investigation and sampling
  • Analysis and assessment of environmental risks and hazards both on site and the immediate surrounding areas
  • Treatment of environmental risks and hazards including implementation of control measures and work methodologies to deal with environmental risks and hazards
  • Compliance monitoring and reporting including clear communication and direction

Corporate Social Responsibility

As a local builder, we are dedicated to the success of the communities in which we operate. In addition to running community engagement initiatives through our active project, we also support a number of charities on an ongoing basis.

Operational throughout NSW and the ACT, RCC is a private, family owned construction company that has been delivering projects as promised; on-time and budget, safely and to the highest quality since 1976. We value our heritage as a family business and we’re proud of our family values.

“It started as a family company and Richard has always involved people in the company as if they were part of his family. Even now at this size it’s still regarded as a family company which is terribly important” – Lynne Crookes.

accredited

Accredited since 1999

Delivered via one platform, RCC’s Quality Assurance, Safety, Environmental and Sustainability processes are implemented through an integrated management system. The primary operating document within the system is the Project Management Plan, which brings together legislative requirements, RCC process and project specific information. This integrated approach means staff has a single source of information, updated regularly and tightly controlled.

“As one of the first contractors to be accredited across all areas of HSQE, we are glad this is now standard practice. We value the safety of everyone in our industry, clients and competitors alike.

The RCC leadership team unanimously support investment in systems and training, as this underpins project delivery. This strength in leadership has driven a step change in RCC’s HSQE cultural engagement over the past 5 years.

Looking ahead, we will continue to work with people who value safety, quality and our environment.” – Jamie Crookes, Managing Director.

Multi-role Helicopter 90 Facility (MRH 90)

The MRH 90 Facility was the construction of a new Squadron at HMAS Albatross in Nowra. Works involved a multi-level office style building for working accommodation for defence operational needs, an aircraft maintenance hangar and storage “hangarettes” in a high bay industrial style area, single level battery workshops requiring specialised finishes and services, and upgrade of aircraft pavements, car parking and road layouts. The project also included the demolition of the existing buildings. The works were carried out in an operational Defence base requiring strict security and access control and environmental management to ensure no Foreign Object Damage (FOD) and no interference to ongoing base operations.

Works involved the removal of 4,300 tonnes of asbestos and management of in-ground contamination. The redesign of various elements of the building and external works required careful management of the delivery programme and implementation of a progressive scheduling procedure to mitigate delays and ensure appropriate consideration of latent conditions incurred.

The successful completion of this important project for our core client Department of Defence has resulted in repeat opportunities for our company.

Abbotsford Housing Redevelopment

The Redevelopment housing in Abbotsford provides 48 new low-rise one and two bedroom apartments in the inner west for elderly tenants. All completed dwellings accommodate people living with disabilities, seniors and people living with carers, in full compliance with the State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP), including adaptable and wheelchair accessible apartments. In addition, the housing units’ design was intended to provide comfortable living, while minimising ongoing maintenance costs, as well as satisfying Housing NSW’s commitment to ecologically sustainable developments (ESD). In this regard, ceiling fans for all units, rainwater tanks to collect water for recycling, solar panels to supply power to all common area demands and winter gardens outside various buildings to assist ventilation have been incorporated into the project.

Penrith Govt Office Building

Design and construction of a new seven storey government office building housing three major government tenants. The project included a 3 level basement carpark and adaptive underground connection to an existing access ramp and ground level plaza and landscape works. Richard Crookes Constructions developed a number of innovative techniques in working with the client to meet and exceed project objectives. The project structure was unique in itself. The State acted as owner, developer and landlord – an original approach to community ownership outside the traditional infrastructure segment. Richard Crookes Constructions worked with the client to build a commercial building that would attract high quality tenants (“good corporate citizens”) and reflect as such on the traditional commercial market.

The composition and arrangement of the base building fabric and passive energy treatment and harvesting processes, plant systems and interfaces represented an adaptive and innovative approach to construction for the commercial market place.

This project faced a number of challenges that Richard Crookes Constructions successfully overcame. The project was situated adjacent to high use public thoroughfares (incl. road and railway trunk routes). It was imperative that the area surrounding the site remained fully operational throughout the construction works. Richard Crookes Constructions was highly commended for achieving a disruption free zone and for ensuring undisturbed ongoing public operations. Despite testing ground conditions, involving working below the water table and latent geotechnical conditions, Richard Crookes Constructions handed over a defect free building to our client, on time and on budget.

The ground conditions were extremely challenging due to the presence of cobbles and river gravels, ranging in size up to approx. 400mm diameter, and flowing ground water. Additionally, because the site was land locked both piling and bulk excavation operations were somewhat restricted, Richard Crookes Constructions conducted ongoing detailed co-ordination and management to meet deadlines.
