Shortland Correctional Centre

Delivery of a new accommodation for 330 maximum security inmates (486 including surge beds) across three buildings for the Shortland Correctional Centre in Cessnock. Supporting facilities include:

  • Exercise yards,
  • Movement control and health buildings,
  • Industries and programs building,
  • General stores building,
  • Associated offices and recreational facilities.

These new additions give inmates full access to a range of rehabilitative jobs and programs and aid in rehabilitation by addressing offending behaviour and equipping inmates with the knowledge, skills and training they need to gain employment post-release.

Additional works included:

  • Upgrade and expansion of the existing 250-bed maximum security prison in which the existing gatehouse was refurbished to enable the new and old facilities to be operated from a single hub
  • Expansion of the existing reception and health building to provide additional observation cells
  • Replacement of the existing visitors building and modification of the existing segregation unit

Connecting the facilities whilst maintaining security at all times in a live prison precinct was imperative and joining a new security system to a live security system required significant interface planning and careful execution.
